Abbey Open Day
Come and discover Abingdon’s stunning medieval Abbey Buildings – they are at the heart of the town’s history – but one of its best-kept secrets!
Learn about the work that goes in to maintaining them and the wide range of events that go on in there. Find out too about the other Friends of Abingdon activities – including Heritage Open Days, the Community FreeSpace, and lobbying the authorities to preserve what is best in the town and make it a pleasant place to live both now and in the future.
There will be entertainment during the day from musicians and actors, refreshments and a childrens’ stall where they can find out about life as a medieval monk and try on a habit. You can also take the time to pore over the fascinating timelines on display in the Checker.
Bank Holiday Walks
For those who want to explore further afield around the town there will be free guided walks leaving morning and afternoon from the Market Place. There will be walks to suit all abilities and interests – ranging from a gentle walk around parts of the town centre, learning about its history, to longer walks to Radley Lakes, or around the Abingdon Waterways.
Walks will leave from the Market Place at 10.30 am and 2 pm – full details are in the attached flyer. All are free and there is no need for advance booking, although it would be a good idea to book in on the Market Place from 10.00 as numbers are limited. If you would prefer to do your own thing, there will be sheets available with routes of interesting walks around the town centre.
Then when you have finished your walk, call in to the Abbey Buildings to refuel!
