Cinema is up and running in the Unicorn Theatre – a modern cinema in a medieval setting. After a “dry run” yesterday the first public performances will be on Friday 29 December, with Ferdinand, Paddington 2 and Murder on the Orient Express and these three films will be showing till Saturday 6 January. After that there will be a break while Abingdon Drama Club put on their traditional pantomime, Aladdin – from 12 -20 January and the cinema will resume from Friday 26 January. Films scheduled for the second part of the season include The Greatest Showman, Darkest Hour, Star Wars – The Last Jedi and more. Full details are at the Unicorn Cinema website and you can also book tickets and refreshments there.
This is a really exciting project for Abingdon and brings together several of the Friends of Abingdon’s objectives – introducing more people to our lovely Buildings, raising money for their upkeep and helping to make Abingdon a pleasant and lively place to live. The current season will run till about the end of March, after which the normal activities of the Abbey Buildings will be in full swing – plays, concerts, talks, weddings etc. The cinema operators, Regal, will continue to show films in there from time to time and are also continuing to look for a more long-term venue for their Abingdon operation.
