Much of the Friends’ activity centres round the Abbey Buildings – caring for them, promoting them and raising money to maintain them, but the other side of our work is our civic role – campaigning to preserve the town’s heritage buildings and promote civic pride. This has been a dispiriting task recently, with 3 buildings in the Town Centre Conservation area remaining boarded up after 2-3 years, serious threats to the fabric of some of them and no apparent prospect of the Abbey Hall re-opening as a venue for community activities. There is a lot of public interest in the last of these and the Town Council have agreed to hold a special Parish Meeting about it in the week beginning 15 January. The Abingdon Herald also ran an article about it. We expect to hear more early in the new year – watch this space!
